The Big Lie of Working in Pajamas: The Truth About Freedom in Business

By Stefano Orrù

The harsh truth? As I write this article, I’m actually wearing pajamas. Now, you might be tempted not to take me seriously, but I’m asking you to do the opposite—because what I’m about to share with you is something that could change how you see your business, your freedom, and the way you show up every single day.

“Work where you want, when you want, in your pajamas” has become the perfect slogan for online business and network marketing.

But is it really true?

This idealized image has won over thousands of people who dream of leaving behind the structure of a traditional job in favor of a freer lifestyle. But behind the scenes, there’s a less glamorous truth that we need to talk about.

Working from home in pajamas

Pajamas Don’t Equal Freedom

Sure, you can work from home. And yes, you can wear pajamas if you really want to. But let’s not confuse comfort with actual freedom.

In the world of business and network marketing, freedom doesn’t mean doing whatever you want whenever you feel like it. The kind of freedom most people are aiming for—financial freedom, time freedom, lifestyle freedom—is something you build step by step, with discipline, consistency, and structure. Flexible hours are great, but you earn them after laying the groundwork.

The reality is that, in the beginning, you’ll probably work harder than you ever did in a traditional job. You’ll be the one setting the rules, creating the plan, and pushing yourself to follow through.

Freedom Is a Double-Edged Sword

One of the biggest selling points of network marketing is that you don’t have to clock in or answer to a boss. There are no rigid schedules, and you’re not tied to a desk. That all sounds fantastic—until you realize that without some kind of structure, you can quickly spiral into chaos.

When there’s no one holding you accountable, it becomes dangerously easy to waste time, procrastinate, or simply drift.

Freedom is a gift, but it’s also a test: are you ready to manage it, or will you let it manage you?

The Invisible Pillars of a Free Business

Every successful entrepreneur who seems to be “living the dream” in pajamas has something in common: systems, routines, and a mindset you don’t see in their Instagram stories.

They have morning rituals that prepare them mentally for the day. They follow a clear schedule, even if they don’t have to. They plan out their week in advance, from content creation to team calls. And most importantly, they operate with a leadership mindset, even if they’re working alone at home.

Without these invisible structures, what looks like freedom is usually just a lack of direction.

Showing up as a professional means developing systems, routines, and a success mindset - even when working from home.

Comfort vs. Professionalism

Let’s be honest: nobody’s saying you need to wear a suit and tie at your kitchen table. But there’s a big difference between being comfortable and being careless.

How you feel, how you show up, and how you present yourself—even at home—matters more than you think. In this business, perception counts. People make decisions about whether to trust you or join you in seconds.

If you look like you don’t care, if you sound like you’re just winging it, if your attitude says “I’m just doing this when I feel like it,” don’t be surprised if people walk away.

Because whether you like it or not, they’re judging your level of professionalism.

Social Media and Positioning: Watch Your Image

On social media, how you present yourself plays a huge role in how people perceive your credibility. You don’t have to be picture-perfect every time, but your presence needs to feel intentional.

If you’re showing up in pajamas as part of a message like, “Look, I work from home and still get things done,” that can work.

But if your video is dark, your tone is low-energy, and your hair hasn’t seen a brush in days, you’re not saying, “I’m free.” You’re saying, “I don’t take this seriously.”

People want to work with leaders, not with someone who looks like they rolled out of bed five minutes before the call.

The Concept of Professionalism: What If You Were the CEO?

Let’s flip the perspective. Imagine you’re the CEO of a company generating millions in revenue. You have clients paying you six figures a year. Would you meet them in your pajamas? Probably not.

You’d have a proper office. You’d dress the part. You’d prepare for every meeting with intention and clarity. Because you understand the weight of those relationships.

Now, in network marketing, every time you enroll a new partner, it’s like opening a new business location.

I don’t love calling people “sales points,” because that’s not what they are, but think of it this way: bringing in a serious new partner is like signing a contract with a store that could eventually generate one or two million euros in annual revenue.

Would you walk into that negotiation in sweats and with a half-baked pitch? Or would you prepare, dress up, and lead with your best energy?

That’s how you should approach every conversation in this business. Because you’re not just enrolling someone. You’re expanding your empire.

Working Less? Only After Working More

Everyone wants the freedom to choose their hours, take mid-week trips, or unplug whenever they feel like it. But those perks don’t come right away.

You get to that point only after you’ve built a strong foundation: a team that moves with or without you, clients that trust you, and systems that run even when you take a step back.

In the beginning, though, you need to be willing to outwork the average person. Do the hard things daily. Stick to your plan. Think long-term.

That’s the trade-off: hustle now for freedom later.

Show up as a professional in your business

Real Freedom Is a Result, Not a Starting Point

Too many people believe that the moment they start their business, sign up with a company, or open a social media profile, they’re suddenly free. Like magic.

But freedom—real freedom—comes when you’re no longer reacting to every little emergency. When you can say no to distractions. When your business supports your lifestyle, not the other way around.

And the only way to get there is by putting in the work that most people avoid.

Conclusion: Pajamas Aren’t the Problem

Let’s be clear: we’re not here to declare war on pajamas. You can absolutely work in them if you want. The problem isn’t the clothing.

The problem is the mindset behind it.

If you’ve built something solid, and you’re productive, focused, and consistent, then go ahead—wear the fuzzy slippers. But if you’re hiding behind the idea of “freedom” to avoid structure and responsibility, then it’s not really freedom you’re living.

So ask yourself:

  • Are you operating with structure?
  • Are you showing up with discipline?
  • Do people see you as a professional?
  • Are you doing the work, even when no one’s watching?

If the answer is yes, then you’ve earned the right to build your business however you like. But if the answer is no, then maybe it’s time to rethink what freedom really means to you.

Real freedom is a gift. But it’s also something you earn. Not with luck, not with shortcuts, and definitely not with comfort as your compass.

You earn it through clarity, consistency, and the willingness to show up like a pro.

Pajamas included… but only if you’ve earned them.
