FTC Chairwoman To Join Herbalife On Stage

 

The NY Post reports: Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez is scheduled to share the stage at a lawyers’ conference on Thursday with an Herbalife executive — while the regulator probes the company.

The move is angering some consumer activists, who feel the FTC boss should steer clear of any possible conflicts.

“It’s like re-victimizing the victims to know that the top law-enforcement official is sitting at the table with the alleged perpetrator,” said Julie Contreras, an organizer with the League of United Latin American Citizens, an Herbalife critic.

Contreras was particularly miffed because the FTC recently bowed out of an event she organized after learning Bill Ackman was scheduled to speak at the event.

Ackman has bet $1 billion that Herbalife is a pyramid scheme — an allegation the company strongly denies.

Ramirez is to speak at the American Bar Association meeting after Pamela Jones Harbour, who recently joined Herbalife as head of compliance.

The FTC said it regularly participates in ABA events.
