Growing Corn or Creating Leaders?

The leadership shift that turns six-figure earners into seven-figure builders.

By Bob Snyder

Two farmers owned adjoining fields of corn. The first farmer was known as Boss farmer. His fields were flawless. The rows were straight, the spacing perfect, the irrigation exact. Every inch of his farm reflected discipline and control. Workers followed his instructions carefully, and he inspected everything they did. Nothing escaped his eye. If his workers made mistakes, they were fired and replaced.

Next door lived another farmer. His fields looked… different. The rows wandered a bit. Some patches were overwatered while others looked slightly dry. From a distance, you could tell the field lacked the precision of Boss farmer’s corn fields.

Boss farmer eventually walked over to visit his neighbor, Dad Farmer. He pointed out the crooked rows. The uneven spacing. The imperfections in the crop. When he finished listing the problems, he shook his head and said, “You’d have a much better harvest if you ran this place properly.” The Dad farmer listened patiently. Then he smiled and said something the Boss farmer had never considered.

“Oh, I see the problem,” he said. “You think I’m growing corn.” He gestured toward the field where his five teenage sons were working. “I’m not growing corn,” he continued. “I’m creating men.”

Attracting Followers vs Developing Leaders in Network MarketingThis story captures the single biggest leadership lesson in network marketing. Many leaders think their job is to grow volume. The great ones understand their job is to grow leaders. And that difference determines whether you earn six figures or seven.

In Network Marketing, income doesn’t grow because you sell more. It grows because you duplicate yourself. If a six-figure earner cannot identify, train, and develop other six-figure earners, they will never become a seven-figure earner. Let me repeat that: if you don’t attract or develop six-figure earners, you will never become a seven-figure earner. This is why leadership matters more than production. And this is exactly where the DRIVE IMPACT Leadership Framework becomes powerful.

The Duplication Problem in Network Marketing

Most organizations stall because leaders become the Boss farmer. They control everything. They tell people what to do. They focus on perfection instead of development. But duplication doesn’t happen through control. It happens through leadership that develops team members into leaders.

Your goal is not to gather followers. Your goal is to develop leaders who sell products and build teams of people who do the same. This shift happens when leaders move from command and control to connection and collaboration. Leadership development is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. It requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to invest time in mentoring the people already on your team instead of constantly starting over by only recruiting new members.

The I.M.P.A.C.T. framework gives leaders a clear path to do that.

I – Identify Their DRIVE

Leadership begins with understanding what moves people. Every person joins network marketing for a different emotional reason. Some crave freedom. Some want recognition. Some want stability for their family. Others want mastery or achievement. When you identify someone’s Primary and Secondary DRIVE, you understand their emotional engine. Once you know their DRIVE, you can speak their language. You stop leading everyone the same way. You begin leading each person the way they need to be led. This is where duplication begins.

Leadership Starts with Learning in Network Marketing

Leadership Direction and Strategy in Network MarketingM – Map the Mission

People stay committed when they understand where they’re going and why it matters. Mapping the mission gives your team a clear destination and a reason to pursue it. It connects the daily activities of selling, recruiting, and training to a bigger outcome. When people see how their efforts lead to growth, income, and leadership, they begin to move with purpose instead of pressure. They are no longer just building income. They are building identity and becoming a difference maker that leaves a lasting legacy.

More Followers vs More Leaders – The Key to DuplicationP – Position for Progress

Great teams are not accidents. They are designed. This is where leaders help new marketers develop the core behaviors that create duplication.

Three standards must be clear:

  1. Leaders personally sell the product.
  2. Leaders personally recruit and develop others.
  3. Leaders model the behavior they want duplicated by their team.

The most powerful motto in network marketing leadership is simple. “Do as I do.” Not: “Do as I say, not as I do.” People duplicate behavior far faster than they duplicate instructions. When leaders consistently sell and build, their team learns what leadership actually looks like.

Leadership Identity Shift in Network MarketingA – Aspire with Authenticity

People can feel the difference between pressure and belief. When leaders push too hard, people resist. But when leaders genuinely believe in someone’s potential, something changes inside the team.

Authentic leadership builds psychological safety, empowering people to try, to stretch and take risks. They start to believe they can become something bigger than they were before, and that belief is the soil where future leaders grow.

C – Coach Through Resistance

Every marketer hits resistance. They get rejected. They doubt themselves. They question the business. A leader’s job is to reframe perceived failure into necessary steps that lead to success. This is the moment leadership becomes necessary. Great leaders do not abandon people during resistance. They coach them through it. They help them reinterpret rejection. They help them reconnect with their DRIVE. And they show them how to keep moving forward. This is where followers become resilient producers.

T – Testing and Tracking

Leadership improves when progress is measured. Great organizations track activity, growth, and development. Not to control people, but to help them see their progress. Testing and tracking builds accountability. It also reveals who is ready for the next level of leadership. This is how duplication becomes predictable instead of accidental.

The Real Harvest

At the end of the season, the Boss farmer harvested perfect corn. But the Dad farmer harvested something far more valuable. Five young men who knew how to farm. In network marketing, your greatest asset is not your personal production. It is the leaders you develop.

Every conversation, every training, every coaching moment should move someone toward becoming a leader who duplicates you. Because when leaders multiply, organizations explode. That is the difference between a six-figure income and a seven-figure legacy. So, the real question for every network marketing leader is this: Are you growing corn? Or are you creating leaders?
